Fabric Shoe-boxes Tutorial

I was re-doing my sewing closet and wanted a cute ribbon/notion storage box. I saw this solution on Martha Stewart and on the Oprah website. I couldn’t imagine paying $17 for a shoebox! So I set out to create my version.
Items/Tools Needed:
✓Shoe-boxes with lids
✓1 fat quarter of fabric per box, plus another fat quarter for lid (1 fat quarter made 2 lids)
✓Scissors
✓Fabric markers/pencil for outlining box on fabric
✓Spray adhesive
✓Paper for making a template - can use wax paper or posterboard
✓grommets and attaching tools- usually in a kit together.
Instructions:
1. First place the bottom of the box on your template paper, I used wax paper taped together because I had it lying around. Outline the bottom of the box onto the paper using your marking tools of choice.
2.To create the rest of the template, rotate the box 90 degrees so that the side of the box is lined up with the corresponding edge of the line you just drawn. Trace this shape to get the size of the side.
3. Do the same thing with the remaining sides.
6.Transfer the seam markings onto the fabric and cut out the shape.
7.With the right sides of the fabric together, stitch the sides. Do this for all 4 corners.
8. Fit the fabric box cover over the shoebox. Use spray adhesive to glue the fabric to the box. I would suggest that you use the spray adhesive outside. It tends to stain carpet and other flooring. Stickiness is very difficult to remove.
9.Fold the excess fabric from the top into the box and glue down. I used Elmer’s glue for this, because the point of the bottle was useful in gluing the inside corners.
10.For the box lid: Trace the box lid onto fabric, use a 3/4 in seam allowance around all sides of the box. Cut out this rectangle and adhere to lid with glue. Tuck the excess fabric inside and glue.
11.The fabric may cause the lid to fit on the box tighter than usual, this is expected. It will be very secure for your notions and ribbons.
12.For the Ribbon box: Mark on box, where you want the grommets. Follow the directions on the kit as to punching holes and attaching.
13.Optional: for the inside, I made a spool to hold the ribbons using an old metal coat hanger. I removed the hook with wire pliers and slid the ribbon spools down each side of the hanger and placed it in the box. The ribbon can still unroll, while not getting tangled in the other spools.
14.Enjoy!
